As professional speakers we are on top of our game. But even if we think we know what we need to do to be amazing on stage, we can still learn by reflecting on our presentation skills. I am writing the book “Toby’s Ten Talking Tips” and thought I would share them. I hope to write more blog posts with more detail on each tip. I’d like to use the stories of speakers – professionals like you – to help people in our industry around the world bring their very best to the stage.
What do you think of the following 10 tips? Do you have a story to tell?
1 – Know your Audience
“The public is like a piano. You have to know what keys to poke.” Al Capp, American cartoonist
2 – Plan and Practice
“Let our advance worrying become advance thinking and planning” Sir Winston Churchill
3 – Dress Appropriately
“Style is a way to say who you are without having to speak” Rachel Zoe
4 – Posture
“Good posture and an attitude let you get away with anything.” Lorna Landvik
5 – Movement
“There are no words only the movement and the point is made.” -Rhee Gold
6 – Facial Expressions
“Often your utterances of your face leak out the secret of your hidden thoughts.” -Ali ibn Abi Talib
7 – Enunciate
“A pleasant voice, which has to include clear enunciation, is not only attractive to those who hear it…it’s appeal is permanent.” -Loretta Young
8 – Vocal Variety
“Your voice is the best tool in your delivery toolbox.” -Andrew Dlugan
9 – No crutch or legitimizer words
“A lot of times, we don’t even realize we’re using them, and that’s where it gets dangerous.” -Niti Shah
10 – Relax
“If you want to conquer the anxiety of life, live in the moment, live in the breath.” -Amit Ray
I am looking to hear from you stories from the road that relate to a tip that I may add to the book. A couple of you already shared some great stories that I can use. Please email me any stories that you think would fit.
